Prefab vs. Custom.
What a Walk-In Cooler Kit Costs.
Here’s the prefab vs. custom walk-in cooler question in one line: a kit arrives flat on a pallet for somebody to assemble, and a custom box is measured, built and installed for the room it goes in. Plenty of businesses run on kits. The rest of this page is how to tell which kind of buyer you are.
Catalog sizes vs. built to suit.
Kits come in fixed sizes. Spaces don’t. When a kit doesn’t fit, workers trim it and force it in. Forced joints leave gaps that foam fills only for a while. Warm, damp air gets in, and the compressor runs longer.
A custom box is built to suit. That’s the only way the box seals the way it’s supposed to. What the panels are made of matters just as much: what’s inside a walk-in cooler panel is the other half of this story.
The door goes where the catalog puts it.
On a kit, the door goes wherever the manufacturer put it. In a working kitchen, the door needs to be where you need it — swinging the right way, clear of the prep table, not blocking the hand truck. We hang doors where your day actually happens.
Somebody has to build it.
A kit on a pallet isn’t a walk-in yet. Somebody still has to put it together, and that somebody is usually you. When Paul Mulcahy at Black Hat Brew Works priced a prefab kit for his Bridgewater taproom, he counted his own hours, decided that bolting a box together was not his trade, and paid to have one built right instead.
The numbers, plainly
Coolers, 4 inches. Freezers, 5 or more.
Two steel skins with polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam poured in between, edges interlocked (tongue-and-groove) and sealed the whole length. No hardware is driven through the foam anywhere.
He Priced the Kit.
Then He Counted His Own Hours.
It’s four hundred square feet in Bridgewater, stocked with kegs, cases and cans, and running today. The kit would have arrived sooner. It would also have arrived flat, on a pallet, with the assembly still to do.

The thirty-year cost.
Done right, cold storage lasts thirty years. Done wrong, you are rebuilding in five. Ron at Savenor Markets put it better than we can: “There’s a night and day difference between you and those pre-fab’d boxes.”
The kit is cheaper on day one. The box that is still sealed in year twenty is cheaper, period.
What custom-built actually means here.
Three things, and none of them are optional:
- Panels measured in your room, built to suit.
- Doors built in our shop in Lakeville, MA, to fit your openings.
- An RSNE crew lead runs every job, site visit to final trim.
That has been the standard for 30 years and 3,000+ boxes. See the walk-in coolers and freezers we build, or read what actually drives walk-in cooler cost before you compare two quotes.
